North American Bald Ealge

The Bald Eagle is a bird of prey found in North America. It is the national bird and symbol of the United States of America. This sea eagle has two known sub-species and forms a species pair with the White-tailed Eagle. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

The adult Bald Eagle is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown. Bald Eagles are not actually bald, the name derives from the older meaning of the word, "white headed".

The bald eagle eyes are attached to the skull

This video shows the paints I will be using to paint the eagle head and talons (eagle feet). I am using magic sculpt to prep the items for airbrushing.

Here are some of the basic materials I will be using to fabricate this realistic bald eagle. The items were purchased from http://www.rmi-online.com/. They seem to carry everything you would need for this project with the exception of the feathers.

Like any model  you will need to clean, detail and paint the sections.

The video below shows the open mouth skull I chose, the two body types (oops, the were left out, I will show you on the next video); the eagle talons (eagle feet).

Bald Eagle head sculpture using clay

bald eagle head study
This is the look I am seeking. The bald eagle mouth's partially open showing its tongue.

The bald eagles images below show how I compare the profile to my clay sculpture.

Almost perfect profile of the bald eagles head.

This image shows where I need to modify the clay sculpt. The back section of the mouth needs to be further up, closer to the eye. Moreover the lower section needs to be angled clockwise.

This is what I have as of now, the images to follow will have the mouth corrections and perhaps he eyes added. I a have not decided if I want to make the upper beak narrower.  I will study additional images to see what I like best. Some eagles appear to have larger beaks.

I just came across this image and I really like it. I think it will fit the concept better.

Bald Eagle Feathers

Leonard, my apprentice is even helping me gather my reference materials.

The feathers will be used as my studies in order to create realistic clay feathers for the Bald Eagle clay sculpture.

Eagle, hawk, owl, and all other raptor or bird of prey feathers are illegal to buy, sell, or even possess (in the USA), for anyone who's not a tribal elder enrolled in a tribe of Native Americans.

Yes these feathers are faux, they are imitation bald eagle feathers made from white turkey feathers.

Reference material for bald eagle sculpture

Before I begin a sculpture I spend days gathering my reference materials. When a live study subject is available I will make an effort to visit and study the subject. I am searching to see if a Bald Eagle is currently available in one of the local Southern California zoos.

For now these videos will assist me in my composition.
